Munificent

I couldn't sleep last night. I dreamt I was trying to remember the name of a film.
The film was a mystery, in which every telling of a certain account swapped details of characters, so that in one version Dr Ward would be an old man and in the next a middle-aged woman, in the first a GP, the second a psychiatrist. The film was dark and drew the viewer in. I couldn't remember the event upon which the film focused (probably a murder), or who was telling these varying recollections of it (the guilty party?). I was sure it was an actual film that had been made.
At one point I woke up from the dream and the name of the film was on the tip of my tongue; it was a one word title and I knew it had Joaquin Phoenix in it (the film, not the title). The next time I awoke the actor I was sure starred in it was different (Kevin Spacey, or Guy Pearce perhaps?)... I even remember dreaming a friend of mine rushed out to buy a copy after he had seen it.
Perhaps I should ask him what it was called?..
