Inspired by Fretnoise's blog DVD to iPhone via Windows I have finally managed to start ripping DVDs to put on the family iPod Classic. Until this marvellous blog I had tried numerous examples of free software that claimed to do the job, but which never lived up to my expectations, i.e. perfect reproductions of the DVD image and video, but in miniature.
Using the advised combination of DVD Decrypter & Handbrake I now have the quality results I have always wanted, which I can merrily watch during my lunch (half) hour - although I did find myself sitting in a traffic jam this morning, long enough to switch off the engine and watch 'Thumb Wars'!
Many thanks to Matt for all his hard work finding the correct combination of programmes - I was only halfway there with my discovery of DVD Decrypter. I would like to add that, despite the simple instructions provided by Fretnoise, I have absolutely no idea about batch scripts, and so have had to resort to using Handbrake's queuing option to convert multiple films and TV series episodes over night (& day & night again).
Some of the titles I have so far ripped include TWOO; Fight Club; Borat; All Thumbs; The League of Gentlemen & Clerks Uncensored. I am currrently on the look out for other titles for my collection so any suggestions would be most welcome!
Indeed, I have spent today asking people for their ideas and so far Blackadder, Civvies, The Inbetweeners and Clocking Off have all been suggested.

Hi Nick,
Glad to be of service :)
The batch scripting just joins the decrypting and encoding processes together so that you don't have to be around to select each episode to decrypt from the DVD, and then queue them all in Handbrake. It still takes just as long :(
I find that films are just a bit too long for my commute, so have focused on TV series. So far I can recommend House and The Unit, though the latter seems to have started to run out of ideas by about season 3 (2 seasons before it was cancelled).
