'Why Is It Drug Addicts & Computer Afficionados Are Both Called Users?'

Somebody else's ramblings... (aka 'a collection of somebody else's collection of other people's thoughts...')

"You can widen your life by yourself, but to deepen it you need a friend. Logic is in the eye of the logician. Don't be so humble - you are not that great. When you gaze long into the abyss, the abyss also gazes into you. A happy person is not a person in a certain set of circumstances, but rather a person with a certain set of attitudes. Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted. Why is it drug addicts and computer afficionados are both called users? 24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case. Coincidence? It is much more comfortable to be mad and know it, than to be sane and have one's doubts. Forgive your enemies, but never forget their names. Blessed is the man who, having nothing to say, abstains from giving us wordy evidence of the fact. Argue for your limitations, and sure enough they're yours. If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant; if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome. In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But, in practice, there is. Three o'clock is always too late or too early for anything you want to do. Glory is fleeting, but obscurity is forever. Treat people as if they were what they ought to be, and you help them to become what they are capable of being. I've had a wonderful time, but this wasn't it. A people that values its privileges above its principles soon loses both. Grove giveth and Gates taketh away. Always listen to experts. They'll tell you what can't be done, and why. Then do it. Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens. It's kind of fun to do the impossible. Hope is like a road in the country: there was never a road, but when many people walk on it, the road comes into existence. Everything has been figured out, except how to live. What do you take me for, an idiot? If you can't get rid of the skeleton in your closet, you'd best teach it to dance.Victory goes to the player who makes the next-to-last mistake. Everything in excess! To enjoy the flavor of life, take big bites. Moderation is for monks. Love is life. And if you miss love, you miss life. Whether you think that you can, or that you can't, you are usually right. I think 'Hail to the Chief' has a nice ring to it. Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work. I do not fear computers. I fear the lack of them. Sometimes when reading Goethe I have the paralyzing suspicion that he is trying to be funny. Treat people as if they were what they ought to be, and you help them to become what they are capable of being. Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away. All love shifts and changes. I don't know if you can be wholeheartedly in love all the time. Too often we give our children answers to remember rather than problems to solve. Autumn is the time when seasons merge because of bare necessity. A man can't be too careful in the choice of his enemies. My advice to you is get married: if you find a good wife you'll be happy; if not, you'll become a philosopher. The opposite of a correct statement is a false statement. The opposite of a profound truth may well be another profound truth. A friendship founded on business is better than a business founded on friendship. When you do the common things in life in an uncommon way, you will command the attention of the world. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. An inconvenience is only an adventure wrongly considered; an adventure is an inconvenience rightly considered. It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity. Before I got married I had six theories about bringing up children; now I have six children and no theories. The great thing about television is that if something important happens anywhere in the world, day or night, you can always change the channel. Of cheerfulness, or a good temper - the more it is spent, the more of it remains. Solitude, if rightly used, becomes not only a privilege but a necessity. Only a superficial soul fears to fraternize with itself. Try not to become a man of success but rather to become a man of value..."
